Do you believe God can do impossible things? If so, do you believe God is able to do impossible things in your life? We will never admit it but I’m sure there are many of us who don’t really think we’re worthy of such miracles and that God reserves such things only for a few holy elect. It can be hard to fully believe that God would do miraculous things for ordinary people like us.
I used to believe that impossible or miraculous things could never happen in my life, I was not cool enough or worthy to receive such things. But these thoughts were challenged when I met Jesus and realized Jesus came for ordinary people like me. I think that for the sake of trying to justify our current circumstances, or the prayers that God didn’t answer, we stop believing God does miracles and we create a God in our minds that loves us, died for us and rose again but will only do things for us that are normal.
If we’re being honest, we pray but we don’t really believe God can do it for us. We don’t think God can heal us because he hasn’t done so for the last 10 years. Sometimes, we think God doesn’t want to bless us with certain things and we stop trusting that God cares for us because it’s been so long.
Remember the lady with the issue of blood? Imagine if she decided that God didn’t care about her anymore and didn’t press in for a miracle. We would have missed out on a great story of faith. I mean, she suffered from this condition for 12 years and spent everything she had to find healing. In most miracles, Jesus was summoned for the miracle but this lady’s story was so different. She decided to change the course of her story with uncommon faith.
She believed in her heart that God had the power to heal her, so she went ahead and touched the hem of Jesus’ robe believing that even the hem of His robe had power flowing through it. She didn’t settle for a Jesus who didn’t have the power to heal her, and her faith not only healed her but saved her. I wonder what stirred up her faith to do what she did? We may never know but her story of faith trumps all my excuses to not believe.
We must have faith that God has the power to do mighty things. We must believe God’s hand is not too short to save or far beyond our circumstances, whatever it might be.
The Bible applauds men of faith who when they could not see it in the natural, they still believed because God made a promise and they knew that God had the power to do what he had promised.
“Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.” Romans 4:18-21
There is a line in the book, ‘Alice in Wonderland’, where Alice tells the White Queen that one cannot believe in impossible things. The White Queen responds to her by saying, ‘I daresay you haven’t had much practice. When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.’
Of course, this book is full of nonsensical characters and plotlines but I wonder how we might be changed if only we believed in the promises God has spoken to us that seem impossible and practice walking in faith. The Bible tells us that through God, all things are possible.
But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26 (ESV)
The Bible is filled with miracles and impossible things. Ask the shepherd boy, David, who became the King of Israel, ask Rahab the prostitute how she ended up in the lineage of Jesus, ask Ruth how she met Boaz, ask Moses how he led the people of Israel out of Egypt, ask the Israelites how God provided for them in the desert, ask Shadrach, Meshach and Abnedgo how they escaped from the blazing furnace unscathed, ask Peter how he walked on water, ask the thief on the cross how he got to paradise, ask Abraham, Balaam, Mary, Joseph, Zechariah, Paul, John and the list goes on.
Now, let me ask you. Are you walking in faith? Do you believe God has the power to do everything he has promised you? He is the God who is mighty and strong on our behalf. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the God who goes before us and gives us strength to fight our battles, the God who came to this world so we could be saved, the God who calms the storms and stills our heart, the Prince of Peace and Immanuel, the God who is always with us. What a great God we serve. Dear friend, let’s start believing God for impossible things. What is your impossible prayer today? Remember, nothing is too hard for the Lord.
“I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me? Jeremiah 32:37
Questions to consider
What are some of the impossible things in your life? Do you believe God is above your circumstances? When you sit down for breakfast tomorrow, think of six impossible things that only God can do in your life. With faith, write them down in your journal or a piece of paper. Pray with boldness and surrender those things to God, trusting God is strong on our behalf and knows what is best for us when we don’t see answers right away.
