Faith or fear? What will you choose this year?

It’s the last day of January. A whole month of 2025 has gone by! Christmas and New year was quiet at our house as I had not been keeping well. We are expecting a little bundle of joy this summer and that has kept us on our toes for the last few months.

‘Anne of Green Gables’ has kept me company during this time. I just completed the fourth book in the series, ‘Anne of Windy Poplars’. If you’ve read the series at all, you know Anne has got quite an imagination. One of her favourite things is to find places where there is much ‘scope for imagination’.

This reminded me how similar I was to Anne when I was younger, my head was always in the clouds, dreaming and imagining. I think as children, we tend to imagine and dream all sorts of things but somewhere in the middle of growing up, we almost untrain our minds to imagine wonderful things. From school to work, we are trained to assess all the possible things that could potentially go wrong.

That’s a great skill to have but I feel sometimes we dwell so much on the things that could go wrong that we are unable to see all the good things in front of us and hope for a beautiful future. I wonder what it would look like if in faith we believed that the God who loves us, has good things stored up for us instead of the opposite.

We definitely do not have to live in an imaginary world but rather, we can walk by faith, with God’s word on the matter, believing in the simple truth that God loves us and He won’t leave us. And if He won’t leave us, and He is with us in this journey, there is much beauty in it already. That this present moment is not as bad as we think.

We can choose to believe that God loves us so much and He has beautiful days in store for us even when it is not what we thought it would look like or believe that God does not care about us and imagine the worst days are ahead.

Without faith, it is impossible to please God.” Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)

It might be easier not to hope too much just in case the worst does happen, and we feel disappointed. This I’ve learned is not what really pleases God. I believe we should in faith, surrender our dreams and plans to God. That whether or not our hopes and desires play out exactly the way we wanted it, we can trust that God has the best in mind for us and knows the story He is writing of our lives. The beautiful act of surrender makes room for peace to dwell in our hearts; no matter what the circumstances that play out, as we wait patiently for God’s plan to unravel in our lives.

The story of 2025 is still being written and we have a choice before us, will we walk in faith for good things to happen or let the spirit of fear direct our thoughts and minds this year? I hope you will choose the former and by God’s grace, have a truly beautiful year.

Questions to consider

What are some things you are believing for this year? Do you feel like you’re sinking in disappointment over everything that did not happen last year? Let your heart be full of faith again this year, and take note of all the wonderful things God is doing in this moment right here.
